It was the last Tanabata-kai at the most beautiful space in Amsterdam “Jacaranda Tree” because the Jacaranda Tree is moving to a new space. The 4th and last edition of Tanabata-kai @ Jacaranda Tree was crowded with 40 children and their parents. We had a great time again this year thanks to all the participants and their parents, Flatto81, Yumika, Wonder-kids and Soona. Thank also to Roppongi, Yukinohana, Fukushima’s Voice and Hanato Morito for collaborating with us. We hope to continue this beautiful Japanese tradition and our creative approaches in the Netherlands. If you know any opportunities we could do this again, please let us know. Here with the pictures below I want to show you around the festival. You can also see more images at FB and a site of Flatto81.

Valentine’s Day Craft Report

The event from “Bring the voice of Fukushima to the Netherlands” has ended with success. My table was busy with little artists all the time. I couldn’t run the workshop well without the help from young volunteer ladies. Thank the ladies for your enthusiasm and hard work!

Here are some pictures from the little artists. Pity that I couldn’t make pictures of all the art work. The little artists have made such different, personal and fun work by using the same material!

All the benefit from my workshop was donated to “Voice of Fukushima”.

Tanabata-kai “The Star Festival” 2013

We had a great time with 35 children and their parents in a hot summer Tanabata day.

Tanabata, or the Star Festival, is held on the evening of July 7. The festival traces its origins to a legend that the Cowherd Star (Altair) and Weaver Star (Vega), lovers separated by the Milky Way, are allowed to meet just once a year – on the seventh day of the seventh month. Children and adults write their wishes on narrow strips of colored paper and hang them, along with other paper ornaments, from bamboo branches then pray that their wishes will come true.

Our Tanabata was planned by Kyoko and Soonhwa to be traditional, new and artistic. We focused on young children 2+ to be able to craft by themselves. Flatto81 and Chika Ito‘s handmade eco inks added a beauty of nature to the festival. Fumiko Ito’s photo booth intrigued children’s curiosity for light and shadow. Roppongi made a nice selection of Japanese snacks and small gifts for us.

Here are some pictures. Thanks to all the Tanabata ladies and also to Simone from Jacaranda Tree Montessori for her support and beautiful space. You can also see some other pictures on Tanabata-kai Amsterdam Facebook page.

Natsumatsuri “Summer Festival” July 2012

Here are some pictures of festival I organized last summer.  Natsumatsuri is a traditional Japanese Summer Festival during which we celebrate the season in Yukata (summer Kimonos). Children participated in Japanese culture at Jacaranda Tree in Amsterdam. We did creative activities and games such as making Uchiwa (Fans) and water balloon fishing.
