content_summerfun2016

Hello,

I’m collaborating with Simone from Jacaranda Tree for Summer Fun Craft Extravaganza. This year we don’t have the Tanabatakai but you’ll have summer fun with your little one, just like last summer.

We’ll be making;

Wind Chimes/Kyoko Kinder Kunst Klas

Paper Fans/Hiyoko Imai

Paper Sculptures/Flatto81

Play Dough Making/Jacaranda Tree Montessori

also some Japanese refreshments and Japanese goodies;

Roppongi

Kyoko Kimono

Please note:
* One of us will be at each station to help you, but parents should be prepared to participate with your child too.
* Bring an apron or old shirt! You may get dirty.
* All ages are welcome. Older children will be able to work on the crafts more independently; younger children will need more assistance from their parents. Even little ones will enjoy absorbing all the impressions and the parents will get to enjoy the craft projects (also fun!).

Date: Saturday 2 July 2016
Address: Veerstraat 48, top floor

Easy! Uncooked Play Dough Receip

image

You can find those ingredients in most Dutch major supermarkets except green tea powder (you can use food coloring instead). I use 200ml measuring cup.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup salt
  • 1 and 1/4 cup plain flour
  • 3 tbs lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 tbs oil
  • (1/2 tsp green tea powder)
  • Food coloring

Method

  1. Mix all dry ingredients together in a medium sized bowl.
  2. Add 1/4 cup of boiling water, lemmon juice and oil.
  3. Stair until dough becomes smooth.
  4. Mix food coloring.

Notes

This makes 2 play-doh® sized lumps. I usually make two colored lumps and keep each in a play-doh® container.

Craft workshop in Dutch school

When my son was in group 2 at his Dutch Montessori school I was asked by his teacher to give a craft workshop. There is a craft event once a year in his school which is organized by parents. That time the event was combined with a charity event. So the children were to make art works and sell them at school to raise donation money. In Montessori schools typically classes are mixed with different ages. So my group was a mixture of group 3~6. This was my first workshop to older Dutch children. Therefore I chose the theme carefully under these points:

  1. fun for both boys and girls
  2. technically not too easy not too difficult
  3. leaving a lot of freedom to put their own ideas
  4. the work should look like finished art work

Here are some pics of the results. These young artists made such beautiful art works 🙂

Theme: ” Making your own tree and insect ”

Material: modeling clay, acid free paper, fresh herbs, dried beans, tempera, wires, etc.

Tools: hammer, scissors, straw, glue, etc.

Time: 2 hours with 15min break in between

P1140872

First half time: we blew some brown paint with a straw. While the painted paper was being dried we made leaves by hammering fresh leaves in between papers.

P1140874

Second half: First I showed some pictures of insects to explain their body structures. The children chose their favorite insects to make.

With a case and frame the works looked more finished.

Tractatie ideas

In my country kids may not bring treats in school, even if its for your birthday. When I was little I had a birthday dinner with my family. I didn’t have parties with friends till I got much older. When I became a mother in the Netherlands I realized a big difference between Japan and Netherlands in celebrating own birthday. Good thing here is that you can enjoy your birthday many times. Dutch kids would celebrate their birthday with the family, bring some treats (tractatie in Dutch) to school to celebrate with your classmates and organize a party and invite some close friends. It’s a lot of treats and cakes to prepare for the parents but you can have fun with it if you have good ideas.

Here are some examples of fun ‘tractatie’.

Don’t forget to share the fun with your kids!

It was the last Tanabata-kai at the most beautiful space in Amsterdam “Jacaranda Tree” because the Jacaranda Tree is moving to a new space. The 4th and last edition of Tanabata-kai @ Jacaranda Tree was crowded with 40 children and their parents. We had a great time again this year thanks to all the participants and their parents, Flatto81, Yumika, Wonder-kids and Soona. Thank also to Roppongi, Yukinohana, Fukushima’s Voice and Hanato Morito for collaborating with us. We hope to continue this beautiful Japanese tradition and our creative approaches in the Netherlands. If you know any opportunities we could do this again, please let us know. Here with the pictures below I want to show you around the festival. You can also see more images at FB and a site of Flatto81.
